ABOUT SHAFER VINEYARDS:
Shafer’s Hillside Estate Vineyard consists of 54 acres all on steep, amphitheater-like, rocky outcroppings and knolls. It receives the full benefit of southeasterly sunlight, and enjoys the afternoon breezes that blow up from the San Francisco Bay channel. The business started in 1972 when John Shafer left a 23-year career in publishing and moved his family to the Napa Valley to pursue a second career in wine. He purchased a 210-acre estate in Napa Valley's Stags Leap District, and replanted the existing vineyards which dated back to the 1920's. Today, there are 54 acres planted. The family grew grapes at first and in 1978 crushed its first vintage and began construction on their winery in 1979.
