ABOUT GIUSEPPE QUINTARELLI:
The estate of Giuseppe Quintarelli, arguably the Veneto’s most important producer, produces Amarone, Recioto and Alzero. Quintarelli Amarone is clearly the benchmark for Amarone wines. While Giuseppe Quintarelli died in January 2012 at the age of 84, and his wife, Franca, passed a year later, his estate continues on in the hands of his children, who learned winemaking from the man known as “The Master of the Veneto.” A perfectionist who practiced rigorous grape selection, Quintarelli released his wines to market only when he deemed them ready - often times many years after his fellow Veneto producers did so.
Quintarelli wines are always small production, highly sought after, and insanely amazing in quality. Total production is 4,000 cases a year. Quintarelli wines are difficult to obtain and while all of his wines are sought after with fervent ardor, perhaps none is chased so passionately as Alzero, Quintarelli’s hedonistic contribution to the cult genre. Alzero is made in an Amarone style but more dry with less residual sugar and is often compared to a “Cheval Blanc on steroids”. Production of the Alzera is minuscule with less than 300 cases made each year - making allocations severely limited.

"The 1998 Amarone reveals a gorgeous nose along with ripe red cherries, cough syrup, spices and minerals on a medium-bodied frame. Made in a sweet, inviting style, it offers excellent length as well as purity in a very classic style. It also appears to have enough fruit to compensate for the volatile acidity which is present." "The nose is subtle, yet complex and enticing, offering spicy dried fruit, fresh cola leaves, tobacco, dried flowers and red brick aromas. Full-bodied, with a tight bead of spicy currant that comes to the fore and characterizes the long finish. More linear than the 1997, but well-balanced. Less concentrated and sweet than in the past." (April 2008)

"There’s something magical about this wine: the purity, the elegance, the harmony, the immediate rush of intensity. This is one of Italy’s iconic wines thanks to the profound purity it delivers with notes of chocolate, leather, cherry, apple, cola and spice. It imparts loads of succulent flavor and is simply beautiful." (December 2007)
