ABOUT LUCIANO SANDRONE:

Luciano Sandrone is an iconic producer in Barolo.  He started to learn viticulture at the age of 14 or 15, and after years of work as a cellarman, he spent his life savings to purchase his first vineyard on the Cannubi hill in 1977, but at first could only manage his land on the weekends while he continued to work. He made his first vintage in 1978, in the garage of his parents, and then spent years refining his ideas about how to make a wine of distinction and utmost quality that respected the traditions of Barolo while incorporating new ideas and understanding about viticulture and vinification. He made every vintage until 1999 at home, until the winery he constructed in 1998 was ready. The new winery, built at the foot of the steep Cannubi hillside, is in the heart of the Barolo district.

Sandrone’s wines are elegant, attractive and easy to appreciate both young and with age. The winery maintains extremely low yields in the vineyard and are obsessive about pruning, harvesting, and take a very measured approach in the cellar. Sandrone subjects the wines to a medium-length maceration period, which is shorter than traditional methods, but makes limited use of new oak in the maturation process, all signalling a more traditional approach in the cellar. The entire range of wines produced are beautiful and impeccably balanced and will age for a very long time.

RATINGS/REVIEWS:

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 92 points

"Sandrone’s 2003 Barolo Cannubi Boschis reveals smoke, tar, licorice and dark plums with superb balance and a vibrant, engaging personality. Made in a sweeter, richer style than Le Vigne, its notable depth and well-integrated tannins make it one of the vintage’s successes. I have a slight preference for Le Vigne over Cannubi Boschis today but both wines are among the finest in this vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019. Luciano Sandrone is one of the leading lights in Piedmont. No grower has managed to so brilliantly reconcile modern and traditional approaches in making wines that are soft, supple and approachable when young, but also capable of aging beautifully. I have been following Sandrone's 2003 Barolos since just after the harvest. Over the last few years they have developed remarkably, and today are among the most successful Barolos of the vintage, particularly for the softness of their tannins, something which few producers were able to achieve. Both the Cannubi Boschis and Le Vigne were perfectly fresh and intact when I re-tasted them after 48 hours had passed. "Clearly 2003 was a challenging vintage. We used less of the fruit from our warmer microclimates for Le Vigne, although obviously we didn't have that luxury with Cannubi Boschis. In a sense it is a return to the past in that multi-commune Barolos had an advantage over single-vineyard wines. We did everything we could to maintain as much freshness as possible in the wines. We fermented using lower temperatures and bottled earlier than normal." (October 2007)

Wine Spectator - 91 points

"Very tight and focused for the vintage, with subtle aromas and flavors of strawberry, mineral and cherry. Full-bodied, chewy and very fresh. Best after 2008. 740 cases made." (October 2007)
